Saint Clarus of Vienne Life History
Saint Clarus of Vienne was born around 590 A.D near the Vienne in Dauphiné, Gaul. He was raised in the virtues and piety of his mother after his father’s death who was a very godly woman.
She later surrendered him to the monks of the Benedictine monastery for further training and education while her daughter and herself retired to the monastery of St. Blandina where it was primarily located for widows.
St Clarus entered the monastery as a Benedictine monk where He was later appointed by the bishop of Vienne around 620 in the monastery of St Marcellus in Vienne south of Lyon in Dauphiné because of his reputation for holiness.
He held this office for forty years until his death and was also the spiritual guide for the women’s monastery of St. Blandina, where his own sister and mother had become nuns.
He gave his monks a perfect example of religious life. It is said that his prayers stopped a flood in the river Rhone.
It is during his last illness that he predicted that the monastery would be destroyed by the Saracens, (a medieval term for Muslims), also three days before his death, he received a revelation of the Holy Blandina with a heavenly host, and she told him his death day hence his death on January 1, 660 in Vienne.
