St Cyprian of Calamizzi Life History

St. Cyprian of Calamizzi was born around 1125 in Reggio di Calabria, Italy, into a well-to-do noble family. His father was a physician, and Cyprian, following in his footsteps, pursued the study of medicine.

When he reached the age of 25, he chose the path of a monk and joined the Holy Saviour monastery in Calanna, Italy.

At a later stage in his life, Cyprian decided to become a hermit and retreated to his family’s lands in Pavigliana, Italy.

There, he spent two decades engrossed in prayer, meditation, and cultivating his own food. His reputation for wisdom and holiness began to spread, drawing people to him seeking both medical aid and spiritual guidance. While some wished to remain as his spiritual disciples, Cyprian often encouraged them to leave.

Upon reaching the age of 60, at the request of fellow monks, Cyprian assumed the role of Abbot at the San Nicolas monastery in Calamizzi.

In this position, he became renowned for his disciplined lifestyle, unwavering adherence to the monastic rule of his Order, his philanthropic efforts toward the poor, and his sagacious counsel to all who approached him.

He undertook the task of rebuilding the monastery, restoring its church, constructing a bell tower, expanding the library, and actively promoting the education and spiritual development of the monks under his guidance.

Furthermore, during the day, he worked as a free physician, offering his services to anyone in need. It is worth noting that, during his life, Cyprian sustained a leg injury when he fell from a wagon leaving him with a lifelong limp.

St. Cyprian died on November 20, 1190, at the San Nicolas monastery in Calamizzi, Italy. He was buried in the church of the same monastery. Unfortunately, the monastery was destroyed by an earthquake in 1783.
