St. Eparchius of Perigord Biography
Saint Eparchius of Perigord was born into nobility. He was the son and heir to the Duke of Périgord in France. He later became a monk and hermit who lived in a cave beneath the walls of Angoulême for forty-four years.
St. Eparchius moved into a cell that had been sealed up in Angouleme (Cybor), France. However, his reputation for holiness attracted so many followers. He was ordained as a priest by Aptonius III, the Bishop of Angoulême, in 542.
The abbey of St. Cybard was constructed over Cybard’s cave after his passing. There is a church in La Rochefoucauld in his honor, and a quarter of Angoulême bears his name. St. Eparchius is the patron saint of the diocese. His feast day is on 1 July.
