St. Eucherius of Orleans Biography
St. Eucherius of Orleans was born to the nobility and grew as a very pious youth and highly educated. It is said that his pregnant mother had a dream of an angel telling her that her unborn son would be a holy bishop, and blessed them both. When his uncle Suaveric, a bishop in Orleans, France died, the clergy and faithful asked for Eucherius as his replacement. Eucherius fought the appointment but finally agreed to it in 721 AD.
He was an active bishop who often visited the monasteries in his diocese. When Charles Martel took Church property to finance his war against the Saracens, Eucherius protested. After his victory, Martel exiled the bishop to Cologne, Germany. There he was received enthusiastically and even given the position of a distributor of the governor‘s alms. He was then exiled to Hesbaye in Belgium where he retired to the monastery of Sint-Truiden.
