Saint’s Biography
Saint Godehard of Hildesheim was born in 960 AD in Bavaria (in modern Germany). He studied at the Passau cathedral school, where he majored in humanities and theology at Niederaltaich Abbey, where his father Ratmund was a vassal of the canons. When Duke Henry II of Bavaria turned the chapter into a Benedictine monastery, Godehard became a monk.
In 996, he was elected abbot to Tegernsee, Hersfeld and Kremsmunster and advocate of the ideal of Cluny. In 1022, he was elected the bishop of Hildesheim. It is distinguished by its pastoral care, attention to the clergy and its biblical conferences. For 15 years he consecrates over 30 churches.
Death
He died after a brief illness on May 4, 1038, and his relics translated in 1132.
