Saint Hilary of Arles Biography
Saint Hilary of Arles was born around 400 AD in Lorraine, France. He came from an aristocratic pagan family and was a close relative of Saint Honoratus of Arles. Honoratus was the founder and first abbot of the monastery Lerins on the small island named after him. He invited Hilary to the house and brought him to the faith. St. Hilary was baptized at Lerins and joined the community as a monk.
But in 426, Honoratus was elected bishop of Arles, and since he was an old man, he insisted that Hilary join him as his personal assistant. Hilary was first reluctant to leave Lerins, but Honoratus went to fetch him.
Bishopric
In 429, Honoratus died, and Hilary elected as bishop of Arles, this had also been Honoratus’s desire. He was only 29 years old when he was consecrated. As a bishop, he continued his strict monastic life and was an energetic and devoted prelate. He sold sacred vessels to buy free prisoners and also built monasteries.
For working so hard to spread the gospel Hilary caused problems with the people and the civil authorities and twice had to be reproved by the Vatican–his zealousness was causing more trouble than converts. But though some questioned his methods, none questions his sanctity or his true belief
