St. Maria of Constantinople was one of a group of 10 Catholic Christians who were arrested while trying to defend the image of Jesus over the Brazen Gate of Constantinople from an attack by the Iconoclasts during the persecutions of Emperor Leo the Isaurian. They were judged for opposing the emperor and martyred.
