Saint’s Biography
Saint Maurontius of Douai was, in fact, the son of Saint Adalbald an officer in the court of Dagobert I, and Saint Rictrudis of Marchiennes. He was the brother of Saint Clotsindis of Marchiennes, Saint Eusebia of Hamage, and Saint Adalsindis. At the age of only fifteen, Maurontius was orphaned, when his father was killed during a military expedition to Gascony. He then lived at the court of Clovis II, where he was engaged to a girl. However, he broke off the engagement to serve God in the religious life.
Maurontius founded a monastery near Breuil-sur-lys near Douai, France. Later he was recalled to court as chancellor of King Theodoric I, who advised him to be replaced at the head of the monastery by Saint Amato, bishop of Sion in exile. So it was until in 690 Maurontius took possession of it again.
During the last years of his life, Maurontius also became responsible for the convent of nuns of Marchiennes, whose leadership was vacant by the death of his mother Rictrude. There he built a church in honor of the Madonna, which was consecrated by the bishop of Thérouanne.
Death
Maurontius died in Marchiennes in 702 and his remains were buried in the abbey church next to those of the holy mother until in 870 the Vikings raids forced the monks to move them to a safer place. Thus, they came to the city of Douai, of which the saint became a patron. His name was also imposed on the town of Merville built next to the monastery.
