Saint Peter of Atroa Life History
Saint Peter of Atroa was born in 773 AD near Ephesus in Asia Minor now in modern-day Turkey. He was the son with two siblings and was baptized as Theophylact. It is said that he received a message from the Holy Virgin that led him to the spiritual student of Saint Paul the Hesychast.
He became a monk at age 18 at Crypta, Phrygia now in modern-day Turkey, and took the name Peter. He later got ordained at Zygos, Greece, and on that day, at the door of the Church, he healed a possessed man. This was the genesis of his healing ministry.
One time, St Peter and his teacher Saint Paul began a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. They did not make it there because a vision from God diverted them to Mount Olympus in Bithynia. Here, at the chapel of Saint Zachary near Atroa, Paul founded a monastery and served as its first abbot.
After Paul died in 805, Peter succeeded him as abbot at the age of 32. Around 815 AD, there were fierce persecutions of the iconoclastic Emperor Leo the Armenian, and Perter closed the monastery and moved to Ephesus and then to Crete.
His support of the use of icons, he realized that he was a wanted man and miraculously escaped the dragnet of the imperial troops by becoming invisible.
Peter then settled at Kalonaros near the Hellespont for several years. His healing ministry flourished causing people to accuse him of invoking devils and practicing magic. However, those accusations were cleared by Saint Theodore Studites.
He thereafter became a hermit near Atroa and restored the Monastery of Saint Zachary and reorganized several others. Unfortunately, another outbreak of iconoclasm occurred after a few years of this work. St Peter sent his brother monks into hiding for their safety but when the persecutions turned violent, he retired to Saint Porphyry monastery on the Hellespont. Peter never left there again except for a brief visit to his friend Saint Joannicus of Mount Olympus at Balea.
