Biography
Pope Saint Symmachus, the child of Fortunatus. Sanctified through water in Rome, Italy. Archdeacon under Pope Anastasius II. Picked 51st pope in 498.
An enemy of pope, Laurentius, was chosen that day by a minority with Byzantine sympathy and with the help of Emperor Anastasius; King Theodoric the Great bolstered Symmachus who rose to the position of royalty. Any kind of crusading for the papacy during the life of a sitting pope was banned by group law. In 501, Senator Festus, a supporter of Laurentius, blamed Symmachus for arranged wrongdoings; the pope would not answer the charges, asserted that common rulers had no locale over a pope, and the Synodus Palmaris of 23 October 502 affirmed this choice. The split with Laurentius proceeded for quite a long time, and at one point Theodoric introduced the counter pope in the Lateran Palace and declared him the lawful pontiff; Theodoric later chosen that Laurentius was excessively Byzantine, and had him expelled.
During all the disturbance, Symmachus spent to a great extent to help bishops of Africa who were aggrieved by the Arian Vandals. He additionally offered help to northern Italians who experienced the attacks of savages.
