St Romanos the Melodist Biography
Romanos the Melodist also known as Righteous Chanter was a Convert to Orthodox Christianity from Judaism. A Deacon, serving at the Church of the Resurrection in Beirut, Lebanon, and at Constantinople. He wrote hundreds of hymns in simple language, appealing to the hearts of the faithful. Of all the thousand or so that he wrote, only 60 to 80 survive – but they still sing today.
He is one of many persons who has been credited with composing the famous Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos, which is still sung during Great Lent. The recent scholarship has asserted that he is not the author of the hymn, although there is significant dissent among scholars
