Saint’s Biography

Saint Sabas Reyes Salazar was born on December 5, 1883, in Cocula, in the Archdiocese of Guadalajara Mexico. Sabas Reyes received his early education and attended the seminar in Guadalajara.

Saint Sabas Reyes Salazar was ordained as a priest in 1911. He served as a priest in several parishes in Guadalajara. When the persecutions began, he was sent as a priest to the village of Tototlán in the San Juan de Los Lagos diocese in Jalisco.

In January 1927 soldiers took over the parish church and turned it into a stable for the horses after destroying the images and lit a fire in the church.

Arrest and Death

On April 11, Sabas Reyes had just performed a baptism in a private home when federal soldiers broke in to arrest him. They tortured him to learn the hiding places of other priests. His hands and feet were burned. Sabas Reyes Salazar was shot at 9 pm on 13 April 1927 in a cemetery outside Tototlan, Jalisco, Mexico.
