St Thaumastus was an Early 5th-century bishop of Mainz which is now in modern Germany, the name Thaumastus meaning wonderful in Greek.

It is said that Thaumastus came from Mainz in Germany to Poitiers in France where he died as a professor. At his burial site, healing miracles were reported and the scrapings got from his tomb were believed to have healing powers.
