St Maria Bernarda Butler, also known Maria Verena Butler was the founder of the Congregation of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Mary, Help of Christians. She was born on May 28 1848 in Auw, Aargau, Switzerland and died on May 19 1924 in Cartagena, Bolívar, Colombia at the age of 75. We celebrate her feast day on May 19 every year in the Catholic Church.

Saint’s Biography
Saint Verena Bütler was born into a family of wealthy farmers in Auw, Aargau, Switzerland. In 1868, Verena joined the nuns of the Capuchins at the convent of Maria Hilf in Altstätten, of which she was elected superior in 1880.
In 1888 she went on a mission to Ecuador where she founded the Franciscan Congregation missionaries of Mary Help of Christians, whose vocation is both educational and charitable.
Forced to flee the country because of a revolution, in 1895 she found refuge in Cartagena, Colombia.
Today the congregation continue their work in schools, colleges, kindergartens, hospitals, and nursing homes in Switzerland, Colombia, Brazil, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy, and some African countries.
She died on May 19 1924 in Cartagena, Bolívar, Colombia of natural causes.
