Saint William of Volpiano Life History

St William of Dijon was the fourth son of Count Robert of Volpiano, an Italian nobility. He was born at the time when Emperor Otto invaded and captured the island. After the capture of the island, the Emperor became William’s sponsor and patron.

In 969, from age seven, he was educated in the Benedictine abbey of Locadio, Vercelli, Italy and became a monk there. In 987 AD, he became a Benedictine monk at Cluny Abbey under Saint Majolus.

He was ordained in 990 AD and served as abbot of Saint Benignus’ Abbey at Dijon. He became the abbot of Jumièges Abbey in 1015 AD.
