1st Reading – Tobit 12:1, 5-15, 20

1 When the wedding feast was over, Tobit called his son Tobias and said to him, “My son, be sure to pay your travelling companion, and don’t forget to give him a bonus.”

5 He then called Raphael and said to him, “Here is half of what you helped me bring back. You have earned it; have a safe journey home.”

6 Then Raphael called the two men aside and said to them, “Praise God and tell everyone about the good things he has done for you, so that they too will honour him and sing his praises. Let everyone know what God has done. Never stop praising him.

7

“It’s a good idea to keep a king’s secret, but what God does should be told everywhere, so that he may be praised and honoured. “If you do good, no harm will come to you.

8 “It is better to pray sincerely and to please God by helping the poor than to be rich and dishonest. It is better to give to the poor than to store up gold.

9 Such generosity will save you from death and will wash away all your sins. Those who give to the poor will live full lives,

10 but those who live a life of sin and wickedness are their own worst enemies.

11 “I will now tell you the whole truth; I will conceal nothing at all from you.
I have already said to you, ‘A king’s secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be made known with due honor.’

12 I can now tell you that when you, Tobit, and Sarah prayed, it was I who presented and read the record of your prayer before the Glory of the Lord; and I did the same thing when you used to bury the dead.

13 When you did not hesitate to get up and leave your dinner in order to go and bury the dead,

14 I was sent to put you to the test. At the same time, however, God commissioned me to heal you and your daughter-in-law Sarah.

15 I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who enter and serve before the Glory of the Lord.”

20 While you are on this earth, you must praise the Lord God and give him thanks. Now I must go back to him who sent me. Write down everything that has happened to you.”

Responsorial Psalm – Tobit 13:2, 6EFGH, 7, 8

R. (1b) Blessed be God, who lives for ever.

2 He scourges and then has mercy;
he casts down to the depths of the nether world,
and he brings up from the great abyss.
No one can escape his hand.
R. Blessed be God, who lives for ever.

6EFGH So now consider what he has done for you,
and praise him with full voice.
Bless the Lord of righteousness,
and exalt the King of ages.
R. Blessed be God, who lives for ever.

7 In the land of my exile I praise him
and show his power and majesty to a sinful nation.
R. Blessed be God, who lives for ever.

8 Bless the Lord, all you his chosen ones,
and may all of you praise his majesty.
Celebrate days of gladness, and give him praise.
R. Blessed be God, who lives for ever.

Alleluia – Matthew 5:3

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit;
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel – Mark 12:38-44

38 In the course of his teaching Jesus said, “Watch out for the scribes, who like to walk around in their long robes and be greeted with respect in the market place,

39 seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets.

40 They take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers. Their punishment will be all the worse!”

41 He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums.

42 A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.

43 He called his disciples together and said to them, “I tell you that this poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others.

44 For the others put in what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, put in all she had — she gave all she had to live on.”
