Pope Eleutherius Life History

Pope Eleutherius was the son of Habundius. He became a deacon under Pope Anicetus and remained so during the reign of Pope Saint Soter.

He became the 13th pope in 174 AD and gave a decree about what Christians should eat or not eat. That is he did away with some of the Jewish dietary customs that Christians were being forced to follow.

Pope Eleutherius also declared opposition to Gnostics and the Montanists and also sent missions to Britain to convert them to Christians.

He died as a martyr on May 24 189 in Rome, Italy, and was buried in the Vatican near Saint Peter the Apostle
