St Marcellus the Centurion Life History
St Marcellus was a Roman centurion at Tangiers in modern Morocco. It happened that during a feast to celebrate the birthday of Roman Emperor Maximian, Marcellus refused to participate in the ceremony because it entailed sacrificing to the pagan Roman gods.
Marcellus threw away his military belt, weapons, and vine staff and openly proclaimed himself a Christian.
He was taken to the deputy Praetorian prefect Aurelius Agricolanus who condemned him to death and beheaded him.
St Marcellus died as a martyr in 298 AD. His death angered a man called Cassian, who was an official writer for the authorities.
Cassian refused to record the proceedings in the court because he was not happy with the ruling against St Marcellus. Cassian was also martyred like Marcellus.
The sons of St Marcellus were Saints Claudius, Lupercus (Lupercio), and Victorius (Victoricus). They were martyred in 300 AD in Léon, Spain during the persecution of Diocletian.
