St Mariana de Paredes Life History
Mariana de Paredes’s parents were Don Jerónimo de Paredes Flores y Granobles, a nobleman of Toledo and Doña Mariana Cranobles de Jaramillo.
During her birth, some unusual celestial phenomena occurred. When her parents died in her infancy, she was taken care of by her older sister and her husband.
Mariana lived a very pious life with a solid devotion to Mary. On several occasions, she was miraculously saved from death.
Mariana was attracted to the religious life. She vowed to live a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. After shelving her desire to become a Dominican nun, she opted to live in seclusion in her sister’s home.
She never left her house unless when attending Church services. Mariana exercised self-mortification and slept very little. She would survive for eight to ten days on only a small piece of bread and the Holy Eucharist which she received daily during mass.
Mariana had many gifts given to her by God like remote viewing, prophecy, reading of hearts, and healing by making the Sign of the Cross or sprinkling with holy water. She once restored a dead person back to life.
In 1645, there occurred a series of earthquakes and other epidemics in Quito, Ecuador. Mariana publicly offered herself as a victim for the city and died shortly after. A pure white lily sprouted and blossomed at the spot where she died. Many years later, the Republic of Ecuador declared her a national heroine.
