St Maurilius of Rouen Life History
St Maurilius of Rouen was born to the Gallic nobility around 1000 AD in the diocese of Rheims, France. He studied theology in Liege, Belgium, and in Saxony in modern-day Germany. He was a member of the cathedral chapter of Halberstadt, Germany.
By 1030 AD he had already become a monk at Fécamp, France. He withdrew from communal life after some years to live as a hermit in Vallombrosa, Italy.
Marquis Bonifacio ordered Maurilius to become the abbot of the San Maria abbey in Florence, Italy due to his wisdom and holiness.
St Maurilius’ reform attempts were vehemently objected to by the monks there and they even tried to poison him. Consequently, he returned to Fécamp.
Duke William the Conqueror of Normandy appointed Maurilius as the archbishop of Rouen in 1055. His hard work helped to restore discipline to his wayward priests.
He presided over councils, helped find a truce between feudal houses and warring families, and united them to fight against highway robbers and brigands.
St Maurilius helped St Anselm of Canterbury to realize his call to religious life. He also built many churches, cathedrals, and abbeys.
St Maurilius died on August 9 1067 and was buried in the Cathedral of Rouen but his tomb was destroyed by Huguenots in 1562.
