St. Patrick was a British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland during the fifth century. Also referred to as the “Apostle of Ireland.” He is the primary patron saint of Ireland.
He is venerated in the Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Old Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox Churches. Hence St. Patricks prayer is widely said.
Though the period he lived is not precisely known. By consensus he is believed he was a missionary in Ireland during the fifth century.
The early medieval traditions credit him with being the first bishop of Armagh and primate of Ireland. He is regarded as the founder of Christianity in Ireland, which was largely practicing Celtic polytheism.
Ever since he has been regarded as such, even though there is evidence of earlier Christian presence in Ireland.
In his autobiography “Confessio” he is recorded to have been captured by Irish pirates. He was captured from Britain and taken to Ireland as a slave looking after animals. In his account, he was there for six years before escaping and going back to Britain.
While in Britain he became a cleric. His relatives initially welcomed him back with open arms. But in later chapters of his book, he referred to tension with his relatives over an offense he had already stood trial for. Though the offense is never mentioned.
This might have been a major factor in his choice to return to Ireland. He returned probably to the west of the Island. There he later became a bishop and ordained subordinate clerics.
St. Patricks feast day is on the 17th of March. it is celebrated both inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday. In the dioceses of Ireland, it is both a solemnity and a holy day of obligation. Also a celebration of Ireland itself.

Blessed St. Patrick, Apostle of Ireland, you have been a friend and guide to me, even before I was born. Please hear my prayer and accept my heartfelt thanks and respect for all you’ve done.
Through you, I received the precious gift of faith, which means more to me than life itself. I now ask you to offer my gratitude and devotion to Almighty God.
Holy Father and patron of my country, don’t ignore my weaknesses. Remember how the voices of little children called you to come to us.

“I wake today Through the strength of heaven; Light of the sun, the splendor of fire, Speed of lightning, the swiftness of the wind, Depth of the sea, Stability of the earth, Firmness of the rock.
I arise today Through God’s strength to pilot me;
God’s might to uphold me, His wisdom to guide me, God’s eye to look before me, His ear to hear me, God’s word to speak for me, God’s hand to guard me, His way to lie before me, God’s shield to protect me, God’s hosts to save me Afar and near, Alone or in a multitude.
Christ shield me today Against wounding
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Jesus Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
