Parish Short History
The chapel, also known as the “Church on the Hill,” was dedicated as St. Stephen Catholic Campus Center on November 3rd, 1991.
Previously meeting in an older home and worshiping at Saint Elias Maronite Church, students from Birmingham Southern, UAB, and Samford University desired a beautiful “positive, friendly, and warm” place to worship and take part in social activities. Inspired by the courage and devotion of the Church’s first martyr, they selected St. Stephen as their patron saint.
The diocese acquired the land, and local architects designed the dramatic 17,000-square-foot building with a contemporary style yet incorporated the look of Gothic arches and flying buttresses.
The pastor and campus minister at the time, Father Frank J. Muscolino, spearheaded the project and was assisted by patrons in the community to raise money for construction. Father Muscolino’s family (Bruno, Inc.) graciously contributed a large portion of the construction costs.
