Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Today’s Bible Verse of the Day Reflections

The passage begins with the Jewish leaders asking Pilate to have the legs of those crucified broken so that their bodies could be taken down before the Sabbath, which was a particularly special one since it was the Passover.

Breaking the legs would hasten death by preventing the crucified from pushing themselves up to breathe.

When the soldiers came to Jesus, they saw that He was already dead, so they didn’t break His legs. This fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy that none of the Messiah’s bones would be broken (Psalm 34:21).

Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, resulting in a sudden flow of blood and water. This event fulfilled another scripture that says, “They will look on the one they have pierced” (Zechariah 12:10).

The flow of blood and water from Jesus’ side is rich in symbolism. The early Church Fathers and many theologians see the blood and water as representing the sacraments of the Eucharist and Baptism.

The Blood represents the Eucharist, where Jesus offers His body and blood for the nourishment and salvation of believers. The Eucharist is a profound mystery where we Catholics believe we receive Jesus Himself.

The Water represents Baptism, the sacrament of initiation that cleanses us from original sin and welcomes us into the Christian community.

The feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus focuses on Jesus’ immense love for humanity. The heart is a universal symbol of love, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus represents His divine love and compassion.

This love is not just a sentimental feeling but a deep, sacrificial love that led Him to suffer and die for our salvation.

When Jesus’ heart was pierced, it was a dramatic demonstration of His love being poured out for us. This moment is a powerful reminder that Jesus’ love is available to all, flowing from His heart to heal and save us.

Reflecting on this passage and the Sacred Heart of Jesus invites us to consider how we respond to such a profound love. Jesus’ open heart calls us to:

  1. Trust in His Love: Knowing that Jesus’ love is unconditional and always available, we are encouraged to trust Him fully, even in our brokenness and sinfulness.
  2. Receive His Mercy: The blood and water symbolize the sacraments through which we receive God’s grace and mercy. Participating in the Eucharist and receiving the sacrament of reconciliation are ways to stay connected to Jesus’ love.
  3. Share His Love: As we are filled with Jesus’ love, we are called to share it with others. This means showing compassion, forgiveness, and kindness to those around us, reflecting the love that Jesus has shown us.

In conclusion, John 19:31-37 is a profound passage that highlights the depth of Jesus’ love through His suffering and sacrifice.

The image of blood and water flowing from His pierced side connects us to the sacraments and invites us to enter into a deeper relationship with Him.

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is a special time to reflect on this love, to trust in it, and to let it transform our hearts so that we can love others as Jesus loves us.
