Catholic Mass Readings for Christmas Vigil Mass, December 25 2024 – The Nativity of the Lord

1st Reading – Isaiah 62:1-5

1 For Zion’s sake I will not hold my peace, and for the sake of Jerusalem I will not rest till her just one come forth as brightness, and her saviour be lighted as a lamp.

2 And the Gentiles shall see your just one, and all kings your glorious one: and you shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.

3 And you shall be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

4 You shall no more be called Forsaken, and your land shall no more be called Desolate: but you shall be called My pleasure in her, and your land inhabited. Because the Lord has been well pleased with you: and your land shall be inhabited.

5 For the young man shall dwell with the virgin: and your children shall dwell in you. And the bridegroom shall rejoice over the bride: and your God shall rejoice over you.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 89:4-5, 16-17, 27, 29

R. (2a) For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

4 I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
I have sworn to David my servant:
5 Forever will I confirm your posterity
and establish your throne for all generations.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

16 Blessed the people who know the joyful shout;
in the light of your countenance, O LORD, they walk.
17 At your name they rejoice all the day,
and through your justice they are exalted.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

27 He shall say of me, “You are my father,
my God, the rock, my savior.”
29 Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him,
and my covenant with him stands firm.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

2nd Reading – Acts 13:16-17, 22-25

16 When Paul reached Antioch in Pisidia and entered the synagogue, he stood up, and motioning for silence with his hand, said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen closely.

17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people, when they were settlers in the land of Egypt. And with an exalted arm, he led them away from there.

22 And when he had removed Saul he raised up for them David to be king: to whom giving testimony, he said: I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man according to my own heart, who shall do all my wills.

23 From his offspring, according to the Promise, God has brought Jesus the Savior to Israel.

24 John was preaching, before the face of his advent, a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 And when John was fulfilling his course, he said: I am not he, whom you think me to be: but behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loosen

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Tomorrow the wickedness of the earth will be destroyed:
the Savior of the world will reign over us.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel – Matthew 1:1-25

1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham begot Isaac. And Isaac begot Jacob. And Jacob begot Judas and his brethren.

3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez begot Hezron, Hezron begot Ram,

4 Ram begot Amminadab. Amminadab begot  Nahshon, Nahshon begot Salmon,

5 Salmon begot Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz begot Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed begot Jesse,

6 Jesse begot David the king. David begot Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.

7 Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, Abijah begot Asaph.

8 Asaph begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, Joram begot Uzziah.

9 Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, Ahaz begot Hezekiah.

10 Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amos, Amos begot Josiah.

11 Josiah begot Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.

12 After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah begot Shealtiel, Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel,

13 Zerubbabel begot Abiud. Abiud begot Eliakim, Eliakim begot Azor,

14 Azor begot Zadok. Zadok begot Achim, Achim begot Eliud,

15 Eliud begot Eleazar. Eleazar begot Matthan, Matthan begot Jacob,

16 Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.

17 So all the generations, from Abraham to David, are fourteen generations. And from David to the Babylonian exile, are fourteen generations: and from the Babylonian exile to Christ are fourteen generations.

18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Spirit.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, decided to divorce her quietly.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.

21 And she shall bring forth a son: and you shall call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins.

22 Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying:

23 Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

24 And Joseph rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took unto him his wife.

25 He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he called his name JESUS.

Or Matthew 1:18-25
