Daily Mass Readings for October 19 2023, Thursday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time
1st Reading – Romans 3:21-30
Brothers and sisters:
21 Now, without the law, the justice of God, to which the law and the prophets have testified, has been made manifest.
22 And the justice of God, though the faith of Jesus Christ, is in all those and over all those who believe in him. For there is no distinction.
23 For all have sinned and all are in need of the glory of God.
24 We have been justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
25 whom God has offered as a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to reveal his justice for the remission of the former offenses,
26 and by the forbearance of God, to reveal his justice in this time, so that he himself might be both the Just One and the Justifier of anyone who is of the faith of Jesus Christ.
27 So then, where is your self-exaltation? It is excluded. Through what law? That of works? No, but rather through the law of faith.
28 For we judge a man to be justified by faith, without the works of the law.
29 Is God of the Jews only and not also of the Gentiles? On the contrary, of the Gentiles also.
30 For One is the God who justifies circumcision by faith and uncircumcision through faith.
Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 130:1B-2, 3-4, 5-6AB
R. (7) With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
1B Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
2 LORD, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to my voice in supplication.
R. With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
3 If you, O LORD, mark iniquities,
Lord, who can stand?
4 But with you is forgiveness,
that you may be revered.
R. With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
5 I trust in the LORD;
my soul trusts in his word.
6AB My soul waits for the LORD
more than sentinels wait for the dawn.
R. With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
Alleluia – John 14:6
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
6 I am the way and the truth and the life, says the Lord;
no one comes to the Father except through me.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel – Luke 11:47-54
The Lord said:
47 “Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed.
48 Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building.
49 Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’
50 in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world,
51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood!
52 Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.”
53 When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things,
54 for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.
