August 28 2024: Bible Verse of the Day – You Hypocrites, You are Like Whitewashed Tombs – Matthew 23:27-32 – Wednesday of the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time
Jesus said, “Woe unto you, the law teachers and Pharisees, you hypocrites, You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear elegant from the outside, but inside are full of skeletons of dead men and all manner of anything unclean, on the outside you appear to be righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and wickedness. – Matthew 23:27-32

Today’s Bible Verse of the Day Reflections
The Scribes and the Pharisees have still not gotten enough from Jesus. Their hypocrisy was so much that Jesus had just had enough of their holier-than-thou approach toward the will of God.
The Pharisees and the Scribes in the times of Jesus had the responsibility of teaching the people about the Will of God, but they tended to preach water and drink wine.
They did not practice what they preached. The intentions of their actions were totally against the will of God. Very few of their actions had love in them.
They did not have love for God and for the people of the lower social class like the beggars, lepers, widows, and the poor.
Jesus was fed up with them and that is why He used the harshest of words to rebuke them. The description that Jesus gives to the Scribes and the Pharisees that they are like nice-looking whitewashed tombs but inside they are full of dead men’s bones, is not a very nice thing to be told.
But it was necessary for them to hear that because they had dismissed anything else Jesus had told them in softer terms.
Therefore today, let us shed off the hard-rock hearts that we have and accept the teachings of Christ so that we may not be told, like the Pharisees and the Scribes, that we look like the whitewashed tombs and inside of us we have all manner of filth.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, help us not to become hypocrites. Help us to continue realizing that our words should be accompanied by actions that embrace the commandment of loving the Lord our God with all our hearts, soul, and mind and loving our neighbours as ourselves. Jesus, I love You. Amen.
