Blessed Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos Seña was born on August 21, 1711, in Torrelobatón, Valladolid, Spain.
He was the son of Don Manuel de Hoyos and Doña Francisca de Seña and was baptized when he was 16 days old.
He was named after Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and Saint Francis Xavier and received the sacrament of confirmation at the age of nine.
At the age of 10, he began his studies at the Jesuit College in Medina del Campo, Spain. He joined the Jesuit novitiate on July 11, 1726, when he was not yet 15 years old, and made his perpetual vows at the age of 17.
During his theological studies, he developed a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart and actively worked to promote this devotion in Spain and Spanish America.
Despite being only 23 years old, he was ordained a priest on January 2, 1735, after receiving a special dispensation.
Tragically, he succumbed to typhus and died on November 29, 1735, at the Colegio de San Ignacio in Valladolid, Spain.
He was laid to rest at the Colegio de San Ignacio, although the records of the exact location of his remains have been lost.
Bl Bernardo de Hoyos Seña was beatified on April 18, 2010, by Pope Benedict XVI.
The beatification miracle was associated with the healing of young Mercedes Cabezas on April 22, 1936, in San Cristóbal de la Cuesta, Salamanca, Spain. She had suffered from typhoid and a serious tumor.
The beatification recognition was celebrated by Archbishop Angelo Amato at Plaza de Colón in Valladolid, Spain.
