Blessed’s Biography
Adalbert
Blessed Adalbert III of Salzburg was born in 1145 in Bohemia. Adalbert was a younger son of Duke Ladislas II of Bohemia king from (1158; d. 1174) and his first wife Gjertrud, daughter of the Duke of Leopold III of Austria. Adalbert was the great-grandson of Emperor Henry IV (1056-1106; emperor from 1084) and cousin of Emperor Frederick I. Archbishop Konrad II of Salzburg (1164-68) was Adalbert’s uncle on the mother’s side. After he died on September 28, 1168, Adalbert was unanimously elected to his successor as Archbishop Adalbert III of Salzburg.
On March 15, 1169, Adalbert was baptized by Patriarch Udalrich of Aquileia, and shortly afterward, he received an archbishop’s emblem, from Pope Alexander III.
After his father resigned in 1172 as King of Bohemia, Adalbert lost his main support and was severely impeded in his actions by Cardinal Law Konrad I of Wittelsbach. He to cling to the office until May 1174, when he was formally deposed by the Regensburg Prince.
On 19 September 1183 he was re-elected Archbishop of Salzburg this time with the emperor’s support, and this time he held until his death. He took his work seriously as a shepherd of the Church and parishioners.
Death
He died on April 8, 1200, in Salzburg, Austria of natural causes and buried in front of the Saint Andrew altar in the cathedral of Salzburg.
