Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Albert of Siena was born in Monte-alceto, Siena, Tuscany, Italy. Blessed William of Maleval settled in 1155 in a wilderness at Siena and founded a monastery there. Albert joined him as a disciple on January 6, 1156, and later wrote William’s biography. At the monastery, Albert slept on the ground, ate little, and when he felt tempted, would roll in a pile of nettles. Another disciple, a doctor named Rinaldo, joined them just before William died.
William died on February 10, 1157. The two disciples buried him in the garden, and later they built a small church and a group of hermit cells over the grave. The community grew and Albert continued William’s work. He died in 1181 of natural causes.
