Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Alexandru Rusu was One of the twelve children of a priest of the Municipality of Saulia, Mures, Romania. He was ordained a priest in the Romanian Greek-Catholic rite on July 20, 1910. Alexandru was chosen as the first bishop of Maramures, Romania on October 17, 1930. For having challenged the anti-Christian authorities, Bishop Alexandru was arrested in October 1948. Alexandru was confined first in the monasteries and was finally sent to Sighet prison.
Alexandru was eventually “tried” by a military tribunal in 1957 who declared him guilty of treason for being loyal to the Catholic church, sentenced him to 25 years and sent him to Gherla prison where he died.
