Blessed Anselmo Polanco Biography
Bl. Anselmo Polanco was the son of a farmer who joined the Augustinian order in 1896 at Valladolid, Spain when he was 15. He studied at the monastery of Santa Maria of La Vid and was later ordained in 1904. Anselmo then started teaching theology in seminary.
In 1922, he became a prior and later a provincial councilor in the Philippines who was responsible for missionary efforts. He also became a provincial superior in 1932 after which he traveled to China, Peru, Colombia, and the United States.
He became the bishop of Teruel and the Apostolic administrator of Albarracin in 1935 where he was known for the depth of his prayer life. During the Republican Army Revolution, in 1938, he stayed with his flock and rejected anything else that was against the interests of the church. This led to his arrest and was used as a human shield by soldiers.
