Blessed’s Biography

Blessed Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet was born on August 15, 1818, in Sicily. He was baptized the same day. Giuseppe came from the count family Dusmet de Semours, which originated from the Spanish Netherlands.

Melkior was the eldest son of Landgrave Luigi Dusmet and his wife Maria-Gracia Dragonetti-Gorgone from the family of Count Dragonetti in Naples. Later he got five siblings. His father had high government offices that eventually led him from Palermo to Naples.

He got his education in at Cassinic Benedictines in the San Martino delle Scale monastery a mile outside of Palermo. This monastery was the oldest Benedictine monastery in Sicily. Melkior sent there as a five-year-old, and there he received his first communion. In this monastery and its spiritual atmosphere, he soon felt at home thinking more and more of himself choosing this life form and becoming a Benedictine. 

Bl. Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet Death

He died on April 4, 1894, in Catania, 76 years old. He was buried in the chapel of the Brotherhood of Bianchi at the cemetery in Catania, but on May 13, 1904, his earthly remains were transferred to the cathedral of Catania.
