Blessed Ivan Ziatyk, also known as Ivano, John or Johannes, was a Redemptorist born on December 26 1899 in Odrekhiv, in Poland and died as a martyr on May 17 1952 in Ozerlah, Irkhutsk, Russia. We celebrate his feast day on May 17 every year in the Catholic Church.

Blessed’s Biography

Bl. Ivan Ziatyk was born on December 26, 1899, in Poland. He belonged to the Greek-Catholic. He studied theology in Peremyshl and was ordained in 1923. Ivan taught theology and catechism and was also known as a good administrator.

In 1935 he joined the Redemptorists Congregation in Lviv. During the Nazi occupation, Ivan was appointed (prior) in the monastery of Ternopil and later in Lviv. 

On January 5, 1950, he was arrested and convicted of preaching the ideas of the Pope in Rome on the spread of the Catholic faith to all countries.

Imprisoned in Zolochiv but then sent to Ozerlah in Russia. He died on May 17 in the prison hospital.
