Blessed’s Biography
Blessed John Gaspard Cratz was born on September 15, 1698, in Golzheim, Düren, Germany. In the years 1721 to 1726, he traveled through Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. John Gaspard used to work for a nobleman as a travel guide. In 1727 John joined the Dutch East India Company and worked as a colonial supervisor in Batavia
In 1730 John joined the Jesuits in Macao. Four years later he was ordained a priest. The following year he was sent with four Portuguese brothers to the mission in Tonkin. But the government didn’t want the new religion there. They were tortured and sent back to where they came from.
They still made a second attempt. Now they were successful. Until they were robbed by robbers, emptied, recognized as Christians and extradited to the government. John was beheaded in 1737 in Tonkin (modern Vietnam).
