Blessed’s Biography

Blessed Maria Gabriella Sagheddu was born as Maria Sagheddu on March 17, 1914, in Dorgali, in the diocese of Sardinia. Maria parents were the shepherd Marcantonio Sagheddu and his wife Caterina Cucca. She was the fifth of eight children in a modest family, however, who were rich in faith. Baptized on March 22nd. When she was five, her father died, and her mother raised her for a solid and Christian life. She attended the local school and received her first communion at her tenth birthday. On May 31, 1931, she was confirmed, at 17 years old.

When she was 18, her favorite sister died, and this “encounter with the cross of Christ” made her undergo deep repentance. After that, she dedicated herself only to prayer and religious practice, and in a short time, she had learned to accept God. She joined the youth section in Catholic action and gave the children a religious education outside the school.

At age 21, she devoted herself to God. She left Sardinia to become the nun of the Trappists on September 30, 1935. Maria Gabriella life as a nun was dominated by two ideas: gratitude for the grace God had shown her by calling her such a life, and an eagerness to respond as possible to the mercies of his gave her. On April 13, 1936, Maria Gabriella dressed in the order suit and got the name Sr. Maria Gabriela. She gave her promises on the King of Christ on October 31, 1937.

Death

Maria had always had good health, but as a 23-year-old she was affected by tuberculosis. After fifteen months of painful sick leave, she died on April 23, 1939, in Grottaferrata, just 25 years old. In 1957 her grave was opened, and her body was then found intact and was buried today in a chapel attached to the Trappist monastery in Vitorchiano in the province of Viterbo, where they moved from Grottaferrata in 1957.
