Forty Martyrs of England and Wales
There was a dispute between the Pope and King Henry VIII in the 16th century.
The faith questions in the British Isles became entangled with political questions. This led to both mostly being settled by murder and torture of loyal Catholics.
The Vatican selected 40 martyrs, men and women, lay and religious in 1970, to represent the full group of approximately 300 people known to have died between 1535 and 1679 for their faith and allegiance to the Church.
Each has their own memorial day but as a group, they are remembered on October 25.
