Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Maria Karlowska was born on September 4, 1865, in the village of Slopow. At seventeen, she lost both her parents. Maria took a tailor-made course and then worked at her sister’s tailoring. It was during this time she meets a prostitute and put her soul into helping them.
In 1894, she started a home “The Good Shepherd”, a house for prostitutes in Poznan and founded a congregation to run it. In the same year, Maria founded a monastery for the “shepherd sisters”, who had the Good Shepherd as her role model.
The monastery’s motto was “to look for and save those who have gone astray”. Maria died on March 24, 1935, in the monastery that the sisters had in Pniewite. She was buried in Jablonowo Pomorskie at the congregation’s mother’s house. Her 1997 congregation had 240 sisters.
