Blessed Marie Therese Haze’s Life History

Jeanne Haze, religiously known as Marie Therese Haze, was born in Liege, Prince-bishopric of Liege in The Holy Roman Empire(now Belgium), on February 27 1782. As a child she developed a strong devotion towards the passion of christ and as she turned 4, she could read and write. Her father served as the aide to the then ruler of the area, the Prince-bishop.

In 1794, her family her family had to move to the German Empire, as the French forces had gained ground and had conquered the Low countries, the northwestern Europe. Peace was later re-established but the experiences of those afflicted, moved her and together with her sister, developed the spirit to help the needy. Her mother passed away in 1820.

In 1824, she and her sister established a school in order to support themselves financially.

Father Jean Guillaume Habets donated his property to the sisters, Jeanne and Ferdinande, in order to open a free school to educate girls in the area disadvantaged with lack of schooling, and after the declaration of independence, which resulted in the formation of the Kingdom of Belgium, the school was established as a christian institution.

Habets was also reluctant in discussing with the two sisters, about the prospects of forming a religious order, but after they were visited by Bishop Cornelius van Bommel, it was evident that the bishop was pleased with their work and the idea pitched to him about the formation of a religious order, had marveled him a great deal. So the bishop approved of the project and Habets was appointed to draft the foundational documents of the new order.

Jeanne Haze took her permanent vows adopting the name Marie Therese Haze of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Ferdinande took her vows with the name Aloysia. The congregation came to be and she was chosen as its first superior and was so until her death on January 7 1876 at the age of 93.
