Bl. Pope Blessed Pius IX was the son of Gerolamo Ferretti being the ninth born. He was an intelligent and religious boy who had epilepsy when young. He schooled at the Piarist college, Volterra, Italy from 1802AD. He later requested to join the Papal Noble Guard but was turned down due to his epilepsy.

Pius studied theology at the Roman seminary during which his epilepsy disappeared. He was ordained a priest on April 10, 1819, in Rome. Became the canon of San Maria in Rome and later chosen the archbishop of Spoleto, Italy on May 21, 1827.

He transferred to be the archbishop of Imola, Italy on December 17, 1832. On 23 December 1839, he was made the Cardinal by Pope Gregory XVI and later chosen the 255th Pope in the Conclave of 1846.

Pius served as the last Pope to hold temporal powers in ruling a secular state. One of his acts was an amnesty for all the prisoners arrested due to political issues. He celebrated the first Vatican council from 1869 to 1870 which was later interrupted by the Franco-Prussian war.

Pius supported several changes in the Papal States which included central Italy and Assisi but he lost the territory due to the merging of the Kingdom of Italy in 1870-1871. He created 123 cardinals and gained a reputation for being a patriotic and making changes in his tenure. Only Saint Peter the Apostle served longer.
