Blessed Romanus of Athos Life History

Bl Romanus of Athos was born in the 17th century in Crete or in central Greece. He was a pious Christian, but illiterate. Romanus went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and remained in the monastery of Mar Saba (St. Sabas).

He wanted to be a witness to the faith among the Muslims, but his prior did not give him his blessing. Romanus then returned to Greece, where in Thessalonica he confessed his faith in Jesus Christ publicly.

The Muslim Turks reigned there, and they arrested him and sentenced him to slave on the galleys. But he was bought free and could retire to the monastery of Kavsokalyvia in Mount Athos.

But his desire to suffer martyrdom was so strong that he did not give him peace, so he went to Constantinople, where he provoked the Turks.

Bl Romanus of Athos was then thrown into an empty well and stayed there for 40 days without food. Then he was pulled up and beheaded in 1694 in Constantinople. Memorial Day on January 5.
