Blessed Titus Zeman’s Life History
Titus Zeman was born on January 4 1915 in Vajnory, Slovakia. He received his high school education from the Salesians of Don Bosco and joined the order later in 1931, professing his vows with them on August 6 1952. He did his theological studies for priesthood in Chieri and at the Pontifica Universita Gregoriana.
He received his holy orders in Turin on June 23 1940, from Cardinal Maurillo Fossati. In his home parish, he also served as a catechist and a chaplain.
Slovakia’s religious community, in 1950, experienced the effects of the communist regime that had forbade the existence of religious orders and so religious members were being shipped to consecration camps. This situation gave rise to the need for the Salesians to move to Turin where they would complete their religious studies without fear of suppression and persecution. Two expeditions were successful as at the time it was illegal to flee Slovakia, both in 1950, one in August and the other on October 23. it was in the third attempt that in April the following year that he was nabbed alongside others that were with him as this was at the time considered a betrayal to the country. In regards to that, he was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment on February 22 1952, set to be released in 1977 but received parole on March 10 1964.
Titus died five years later after his release on January 8 1969 due to heart failure brought about by harsh prison conditions.
