Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Ulrika Franziska Nisch was born as French Dettenrieder on September 18, 1882, in Oberdorg-Mittelbiberach, Germany. She was named after her grandmother. Her family was poor. Franziska completed her studies, and she had no choice but to support her parents and siblings and also donated her services to other families. On April 21, 1895, Franziska received her first communion at thirteen and the following year she was confirmed. She was characterized by a deep religiousness.
Several times, Franziska had expressed the desire to become a nun in a strict monastery, but her relatives always discouraged her from doing so because she could not cope with the usual fees to enter the monastery. Priest Joseph Rupf, strengthened her with the remark: “If you have the call, you must also go!”.
In 1903, Franziska suffered from a severe form of erysipelas and in hospital, she was treated by the Sisters of Charity of Holy Cross. Impressed by them she followed her call to religious vocation by joining the Sisters on 17 October 1904 at the Hegne monastery in Konstanz, Germany. Franziska worked as a cook in several houses in her Order and dealt with a series of deep mystical experiences.
Death
She died on May 8, 1913, at the Saint Elizabeth hospital in the House of Hegne, Baden-Baden, Germany of tuberculosis.
