Blessed Vladimir Ghika, also called Ghica was a priest and a convert from Romanian Orthodoxy to Roman Catholicism. He was born on December 25 1873 in Constantinople (Istanbul), Turkey and died as a martyr on May 16 1954 in Jilava, Bucharest, Romania in prison. We celebrate his feast day on May 16 every year in the Catholic Church.

Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Vladimir Ghika was born as a Romanian prince and was the grandson of the last ruler of the Republic of Moldova.
Vladimir studied in Toulouse, France, at the University of Paris, Romania and at the Dominican University in Rome. He founded the first free hospital in Romania and the country’s first ambulance. Vladimir was consecrated on October 7, 1923, in Paris, France.
On August 3, 1939, he returned to Romania and took care of his parishioners, sick and refugees throughout the Second World War.
He was arrested, tortured, beaten, starved to death, and finally killed by Communists on November 18, 1952, because he was a Christian.
