Blessed Clare Agolanti of Rimini Biography
Blessed Clare Agolanti of Rimini was born to a noble family and was married twice where she spent most of her time in sinful, dissolute pleasures. However, when her father and brother were executed in civil war disturbances, she changed her life completely.
Clare became a Franciscan tertiary and founded a convent although she never became a nun. To make up for her early sinful life, she made penances that were termed extreme until the 14th Century where she sold herself into slavery to buy a man out of prison. The judge shortened the man’s sentence, made the money returned and freed Clare.
It is said that when some nuns were freezing due to lack of fuel for their fires, Claire went into the forests for logs for the convent. One day a relative stopped her and told her that it was not in order for a noblewoman like her to carry wood, work which was meant for servants. She answered that if Jesus carried his cross to Golgotha for the sake of sinners like her, why not her for the brides of Christ.
