Blessed Rosalie Rendu Biography

Blessed Rosalie Rendu was the eldest of four daughters. At three, the French Revolution broke out and the priest loyal to Rome were expelled, Killed and others chased into hidings. Her family hid some who were ministering to French Catholics under the arm of hired farm hands.

She had her first communion in her basement in a mass celebrated by one of the convert priests. On May 12, 1796, her father died while she was just nine. Months later, her sister died too. She then joined Ursuline Boarding school in Gex, France for two years.

As a young lady, she started working with the Daughters of Charity at the local hospital. On May 25, 1802, she joined the Congregation at the motherhouse of the Daughters of charity in France taking the name Rosalie.

Her strict devotion to religious life ruined her health which made her be transferred to the house in Mouffetard District where she worked in the slum for 54 years teaching catechism and taught girls to read.

She founded a free clinic, pharmacy, school, orphanage, a child-care center, and a home for the elderly poor. She was later awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honour by Napoleon III in 1852 for her charitable work. during her last two years, she became blind.
