Biography
St. Athanasius of Nicomedia was born in a wealthy family but preferred an ascetic life as a hermit. He became a monk and later an abbot at the monasteries of St. Peter and Paul near Nicomedia in Turkey.
He was arrested imprisoned and later exiled during the Iconoclastic persecutions of Emperor Leo V. He was of great support to Saint Theodore Studites.
