St. Fructuosus Biography
Saint Fructuosus was the son of a general who served the king of the Visigoths. At a young age, he accompanied his father on official trips over his estates. After his parent’s death, Saint Fructuosus inherited a great fortune which he used in helping the poor and the slaves. He founded new religious centers.
To be admitted in the seminary he studies at the school founded by the bishop of Valenza Conancio. In 647 he founded houses in Lusitania, Asturia, Spanish Galicia, and the island of Gades. St. Fructuosus appointed an abbot and retired into the desert.
Saint Fructuosus established several monasteries over the course of time:
1 Iberian Peninsula monastery.
2 Rufiana, in El Bierzo.
5 At the Island of Cádiz.
6 Nono (unknown location). some were located in Gallaecia.
Others monks were attracted to St. Fructuosus teaching that the king limited the number of men to join. He was afraid there would not be enough young men for his army. St. Fructuosus relationship with the kings was not that great. In 652 Fructuosus wrote to the king (Recceswinth) to release prisoners held for political reasons by King Chintila
After the death of Bishop, Riccimer Fructuosus ordained bishop of Dumio in 654.
He died on April 16 665 and his remain translated to Santiago de Compostela, Spain in 1102.
