Blessed Maria Franciszka Siedliska Life History
Blessed Maria Franciszka Siedliska was born on November 12, 1842, at Roszkowa Wola Castle in Rzeczyca, Poland.
She was the eldest daughter of Adolf Adam Siedliski and Cecilia Marianna Morawska, who were affluent and came from an aristocratic background. They lived in an area of Poland that was under Russian occupation.
In her late teenage years, Franciszka felt a calling to a religious vocation, despite the strong opposition from her family.
Her family, who were largely indifferent Catholics, did not support her decision, and her father went to the extent of expressing that he would rather see her dead than become a nun.
However, the death of her father in 1870 enabled her to pursue her vocation. She went on to establish the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth on May 1, 1884, and adopted the name Sister Mary of Jesus the Good Shepherd.
Blessed Maria Franciszka Siedliska died on November 21, 1902, in Rome, Italy.
The process of beatification for this late nun commenced in 1941 under the papacy of Pope Pius XII.
She was initially recognized as a Servant of God, and it was subsequently confirmed that she had led a life marked by heroic virtue.
On April 29, 1980, she was declared Venerable, and on April 23, 1989, Pope John Paul II beatified her.
