Saint Aelred of Rievaulx’s Life History
Saint Aelred was born in 1110 AD, in Hexham, Northumberland, England, in a family of three children and was born from Eliaf, priest of St. Andrew’s at Hexham. He received his early education from the Cathedral school at Durham by Lawrence of Durham.
At the age of 14, he joined the court of King David I of Scotland in Roxburgh and worked there till he was promoted to Steward and master of the household before leaving in 1134 AD to join the Cistercian abbey of Rievaulx in Yorkshire.
he became novice master at Rievaulx before being appointed abbot of the abbey, daughter house of Rievealx’s in Lincolnshire. He was made abbot of Rievaulx in 1147 AD.
Aelred was also a writer as he wrote several spiritual books, one being, Speculum cantatis(The Mirror of Charity) and another one De Spirituali amiata, a book on Spiritual frienship. He was once involved in political affairs with efforts being recognized very fruitful in the formal recognition of Pope Alexander III. He also authored books addressed to King Henry II of England, advising him on how to be a good king.
He developed kidney stones and arthritis in his later years leading to his death on January 12 1167 AD. He was buried at Rievaulx Chapter House alongside William, first abbot of Rievaulx.
