St Alexander of Jerusalem Biography
He was also known as:
- Alexander of Cappadocia
St Alexander of Jerusalem Studied in Alexandria, Egypt. A fellow student with Origen. He was the Bishop of Cappadocia. Alexander was imprisoned from 204 AD to 211 AD for his faith during the persecutions of Severus. He traveled to Jerusalem upon his release. He was the coadjutor bishop of Jerusalem with Saint Narcissus in 212 AD.
Alexander was Censured for encouraging Origen to teach in churches. while he was still a layman. He also developed a large theological library. Alexander was imprisoned again during the persecutions of Decius. When he had been given a chance to save himself by denouncing Christianity, he made a public pronouncement of his faith. He was then thrown to wild animals, but they refused to attack him. He was then re-imprisoned again. Alexander died in chains from general maltreatment. Martyr.
